Long time reader, first post...

Hello all,

I am having FPS problems in Steam Games goinf rom 299 to 12 FPS at times randomly. This is happening with 2 different cards (8800GT and 4890). When this happens my FPS drops to 12 form the 200's and my ping goes from 10 to 50. It seems like eveything is slowing down. this only ahppens in steam online games for some reason. I can play BIOSHOCK fine.

i7 920
Gigabyte X58 MOBO
6GB Patriot 1600 mhz DDR3
Diamond 4890 1 GB w/current drivers.

Vista 64 home premium

Is there a program that can scrub background services? I am running McAfee Total Protection 2009 but it is not running a scan during these times. The McAfee shield is on. Could it be that McAfee is slowing it down to make sure that Steam is not a corrupt program?

Any Help is appreciated.

well seeing that you have an AMD/ATI card i would try this http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_fusion.aspx?p=1

its called AMD Fusion for Gaming and it shuts off background processes :)

it seems like the Source Engine is giving you the troubles but i must ask... are these all valve games you mean by steam games, or is the problem because of the steam platform itself

Actually after a lot of troubleshooting I found that EasyTune6 from Gigabyte was causing the problem overclocking from windows. Everytime I saw a slowdown it would increase the CPU usage for Easytune.

Fusion only works for AMD processors and I have an i7.

Thanks for the help but it has been fixed by o'cing in the BIOS and not from a program.
