Is this PSU powerful enough for this rig?

Can an Antec EarthWatts 500W power this rig:

- Phenom II X3 720 BE
- XFX Radeon 4870
- 2x2gb DDR3
- Gigabyte MA770T
- 1 SATA 7200rpm HDD
- others: sound, NIC, no optical drive
- 2-3 case fan

Since the 720 is a BE, I plan to OC it to about 3.6-3.7gb. I don't plan to OC the 4870 anytime soon. The EarthWatts can output about 400W max on the 12V rails.

If this PSU doesn't work, can you suggest one that is not too much more expensive, and equally quiet?

  1. It's enough power, even when you decide to oc the 4870.

I was a little concerned after reading Tom's Hardware review where they suggested that 4870 under full load uses 283W. But on this site, the highest wattage they have for a single 4870 is 183W, which seems more reasonable.

This site seems to suggest that the 280W number is for "total system consumption" at full load:

If that's the case, I think my intended EarthWatts 500W should have enough juice for the rig.

Yep, and the Toms review is also "total system consumption "
