I have a desktop and just got a laptop and router to install-found out trying to install router that the ethernet connection on my computer doesn't work. Evidently I had been getting on the internet thru usb port. So put router on laptop and it works but can't get in desktop. Who replaces ethernet ports or is there another alternative?
It's more than likely a software issues, not a bad port. I have only twice, in my 7 years of corporate/K12 computer repair career seen a dead ethernet port.
However, if it is dead, you can simply buy a ~$10 NIC card and add it into an expansion slot such as a PCI or a PCIe 1x slot.
Make sure you've unplugged the old USB connection first. Also make sure that you can see your NIC card in Device Manager and that it has the proper drivers installed.
Also, it could simply be disabled (via the OS\Software).
