Mangled dvd drive

Greetings
My friend's hp laptop(dv6) had a most unfortunate accident. However,
despite some scars, everything but the dvd drive is fine. In fact it opened up at impact and busted off! Anyway, though the computer section still shows the e drive I'm thinking it would
be best to just go with an external dvd drive since I'm not savvy enough to judge whether
the laptops drive is salvagable at all. My question is could I make an external dvd drive the new
e drive? Thanks.

Just connect an external DVD drive and the system will assign it a drive letter.
