Even if the resolution is 1440x900, it's still not overkill... it all depends on the games you play and the specs of the rest of your computer. We can help you a lot better if you answer these:

Current computer specs:
Monitor resolution:
Games that you play:

FFS NOT THIS QUESTION AGAIN

With a modern video card does DOOM3 at max settings require alot of performance to get the resolution you want? NO. Does Crysis at max settings run the same as doom 3 "because its at the same resolution"? NO

Screen Size and Resolution are UNRELATED to choice of video card - you buy something to your budget and system spec NOT SCREEN SIZE

Please no one ask this stupid question again.

apache, I don't think it's a stupid question. Oviously it makes a difference what games you play, or what you use it for, but if you have a single 20" display, I don't believe you need a CF setup, even for Crysis. Resolution does make a big difference. I can tell a huge difference going from 1920*1200 to 2560*1600, I have a trifire setup, and I think it's overkill at the first resolution, but helps at the latter. My friend ran Crysis fine on a single 4850 with a 20" monitor, so it's all preference

I'd like to see a 4870 CF setup run crysis at maxed settings @ even 1650x1080. You're right, the CF setup is overkill to even 90% of the maxed settings, but the last few slider notches are the ones that make all the performance difference in most games. Some people are obsessed with maxing everything, I'm not personally, but meh..

Also, they have laptop monitors that are 1920x1200 @ 17", so for all we know he has some rare japanese LCD thats 2560x1600 @ 20" lol

Lol, very true. Like I said earlier, it all depends on your preference. Personally I say if you have the money, go for it, but it will be overkill for most games. I personally Enjoy getting 100+FPS playing GRID @ 2560*1600 lol
