New Samsung drive, Acronis showing errors, Seagate says no

I installed a new Samsung Spinpoint 1TB drive about a week ago in my new build and everything was working well--or so I thought. I ran Acronis Drive Monitor for checking an unrelated external drive only to be greeted by a HUGE list of scary messages: "Critical Events: High Risk Events Detected." On May 7 and 8 lots of errors and warnings appeared..E.g. "The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur" and "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy2."

I did some work with PartitionWIzard this last weekend which may have been responsible. I resized the partition and ended up having to reboot after the operation froze. It booted fine and no errors were reported. Anyway, upon seeing all these errors I ran CHKDSK /F, everything checked out. Then I ran SeaTools from a CD in DOS mode, did the short and long tests, both of which checked out with no errors.

Was this a false alarm by Acronis if Seagate and Microsoft aren't showing any errors of any kind? I'm a bit worried I'll need to return the drive if this is something that could bring long-term issues..

  1. I should also note that Acronis hasn't logged any errors since May 8th...Despite plenty of usage since then..
  2. Can you post a SMART log using a tool such as HD Tune (http://www.hdtune.com).

  4. Although you have 10 reallocated sectors, everything else looks fine. I think Acronis just reported some incorrect information or as you said, it didn't like your repartitioning.
  5. Don't reallocated sectors indicate errors that have been accommodated and worked around? So do you think those 10 sectors are being reported correctly or are attributable to Acronis? Is SMART data and/or Acronis known to deviate at times from the actual data? I'm just trying to figure out what to do since the drive is brand new and I want to make sure I've not got a faulty unit on my hands...
  6. I'd trust the SMART values as this come from the drive controller itself. 10 reallocated sectors is very minimal, and yes, the data was moved to a different sector and is fine. It when you run out of spare sectors that you run into trouble. "Current pending sectors" are the ones where the data can't be moved and that data is most likely corrupt.

    You can check the SMART values every few days. If the reallocated sector count and current pending sector count isn't going up, then you should be fine.
  7. Isn't the value '10' on the 'Threshold' column though? Unless I'm mistaken, the raw value is showing a zero. The other SMART values also seem fine, except for one write error.

    The formatting is off, but to me it looks as if raw is the 3rd from last field and if I count over three from the end I see the value 10. Either way, it's acceptable.

    Try using HDTune or Speedfan which will show a nice chart. Speedfan even has an analyze button (I think it reads analyze) that will bring up a web page with your values and compare it to other drives of that make/model and give you more detail.

    There are 8 variables, correct? "OK" is the status, then there are the variables for "value" and "worst" followed by threshold..I'm not sure either..
  11. There are 9 values. Click this link and scroll about half way to see what all the attributes are. Not all drive manufacturers use all attributes.

  15. HWMonitor is free and can show temps. If the temperature is still out of whack, the temperature probe in the drive may not be working properly. This does not effect the performance of the drive.
