Just out of no-where? None of the icons, including the shortcuts? Error messages?

It started with Real Player Downloader. When I was downloading a video, the icon would appear on the taskbar but would not come up on the screen when I clicked on it. I had installed Google Chrome a couple weeks ago and I thought that might be interefering so I uninstalled it. Now, only Real Player will respond to a click. Even when I go to a site and add a new "create a shortcut" icon it won't work either.
I get an error messgae that says the http:// is not hooked to "that URL or something like that.

I quit using the machine and got out my old tried and true XP Compac which is a little like a tank with energizer batteries. It just keeps on chugging along. (8 years old and still OK).
Help!
