Desktop memory question

Hi, can someone please tell me if ddr dimm, and ddr sdram are the same? I`m upgrading a freinds old comp and want to add memory. (has dimm)

Dimm can't be compared to SDRAM

they are two different things

what RAM does your friend have

SDRAM are not DDR, here's Kinston's illustration - see the pin count and the bus speeds. I just upgraded my brother's old computer with 512 MB of sdram, and one my friend's asked me if really could spare losing the memory.

ddr means double data rate, dimm means dual in line memory module, sd ramm means synchronous dynamic ram. your main concern is finding out if the board takes ddr or ddr2 or ddr3 ram. should have a sticker on the side of the ram that tells you what it is. if its just a bunch of numbers type them into a google seach and it should give you specs on the ramm. google is your friend.

DIMM is a very general term that applies to mostly all ram used since the first pentium processor. SDRAM is a subset of that but still a very general term (all DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 are all technically SDRAM) however SDRAM on its own usually refers to the memory standard which preceded DDR.

If both memories say DDR (and not DDR2/DDR3) then they should be the same type (assuming there both desktop memory).

However, as Upendra stated we will need more information than that. The following would be helpful:

- size and speed (model number) of the current ram
- mother board model
- specifically to find out what memory speed and size it supports, hopefully a QVL
- current ram configuration (how many slots used/free)
- desired upgrade (how much more ram do u wanna put in)
