CDRW/DVD drive issues

I have a Memorex 16X DVD+-R/+-RW & CD-R/RW Drive that just quite working.
I ran MS fixit diagnostics and it would not fix the drive. I have installed the old CD Drive that came with the Computer and it works fine. The Computer is a Compaq S5000NX.
It appears the drive head is not reading anything. The drive opens and spins but shows up as an empty drive.
Do you have any suggestions, or is it scrap?

Does the drive show in disk management, valid drive letter etc.

Have Windows updates been applied recently ? Could have overwritten driver, which MS is famous for doing - Try restore point to date when it was working ?
