I have the 960 Oc'd to 3.58 (17.5 mult & 205 FSB) aircooled , rock solid - Heart touching, LOL

The question is. I was reading about the Phenom ll 965 and was wondering if it made any sense at all to get this chip.

is the performance that better or should I just wait until the next gen comes around in a year or two?

No it's not that better. There are new 965's being released on the 4th November and they should allow for overclocks of 4.2ghz or so, but I still wouldn't bother with those if I had a 940, which I do.

you mean you overclocked a 940 not 960 right? and yes the 965 is better but no point in upgrading well i wouldnt. depends on what your gonna use the 965 for if its just for gaming 940 is good enough

as the others have already outlined... 965 is definitely better than the 940... but it is pointless to upgrade now... the difference in performance after the upgrade is negligible... so i'd not spend anything for a processor for quite some time if i were u...

Any chance that those new 965's will have a lower power consumption as well?

Yes they will be 125W and the 955 BE will be 95W.

there is absolutely no point in replacing a 940 with a 965 if you overclock. That would be like replacing a i7 920 for i7 950. Money would be better spent on more ram, better video card, etc...

Thanks for the replies. My Trusty 940 (sorry for typo) is going strong, but I was interested in upgrading an older opteron in my media and my question was more geared at whether I should simply get another 940 (cheaper) or go with the 965.

I think since it will not be actually replacing the 940 but an opteron a 965 will be the way to go. Thanks!

well got the chip in from Newegg (gotta love them) will be plauing around with it this weekend. This will go on a M4a79T board with 4GB of ram and a very nice zalman cooler. Lets see what we can do with this puppy

Chip posted no problems (though I had flashed the bios to latest release)

Right now air cooled it is running at 3.9 GHZ, stable at 15 minutes of super prime.

t is running a bit on the hotter side as compared to my 940. Idles at 39 & 55 under laod. So may look at better cooling or perhaps a watercooled solution.

Thanks again for all replies

55 under load seems pretty decent to me.

edit - did you wait and get one of the new 125w versions?
