Sata 2 motherboard and cable in sata 3 drive

if i were to buy a sata 3 hard drive(wd5000aakx) would i be able to plug a sata 2 cable into a sata 2 port on my mobo and my hard drive.

Yes... the SATA III cable is backwards compatible with the SATA II ports.

SATA 3 is backwards compatible with SATA2 so that would work fine.

As Rusting In Piece stated, the SATA III hard drive will work on the SATA II port with a SATA II cable at SATA II speeds.
