If we throw an AMD chip and an Intel chip in the blender, which one will win?

For that matter, where in the world is Carmen SanDiego?

Awww come on guys, lets give him a serious test. Maybe he is smart and just wants to show us how much better he is then all of us.

Without respect to overclocking, why does running DDR2-1066 ram make more sense on an AMD AM2 chip then a C2D CPU?

Sorry, there is no capital of Assyria as it no longer exists.
There were four capitals of Assyria throughout the duration of the empire, and Nineveh is just one of them; the first capital was the city of Assur, the second was Nimrud, the third was Dur Sarukin, and it was finally moved to Nineveh.

i have a legitimate question!!!

explain to me the difference between virtual cores and actual cores on a CPU, and the difference between virtual threads and actual threads por favor! why does a i7 have 8 virtual threads and 8 virtual cores and amd only has 4. (i could be wrong about those numbers but i'm stating these not as facts, i got them from information i may have misinterpreted off of tom's :P)

The virtual cores you are talking about are enabled using hyperthreading, a proprietary technology owned by Intel, which is used to improve parallelization of computations. Basically what it does is fool the OS into thinking there are 2 cores (or 8) instead of one (or 4) and spreads the load over the two virtual cores. Real cores are much better than virtual ones, as virtual cores can only increase performance by up to 30%, where a real core can increase performance by up to 100%.
AMD can not implement this because they do not own rights on it.

Reply to pepperman

and they wont create thier own virtual threading technology? is it an on die feature? hardware related or instruction related?

Hardware and instruction, and software for that matter, but any OS that supports multiple cores has the drivers for it.
To my knowledge, AMD has no plans of implementing their own virtual core technology, but I don't follow AMD's news very much, so for all I know, they may be. If you really want to know, I recommend googling it.

Reply to dogman_1234

Intel don't own the IP for Simultaneous Multithreading, only their own implementation which is Hyper-threading. IBM worked on SMT back in the 1960s.

ok,since im noo herr, iz ther 'n'e whey i cood 'elp

Reply to dogman_1234

i googled virtual cores hyperthreading and virtual threads. nothing good was found after thirty minutes except for a hyperthreading explanation book from intel for 20$ lol. and thanks for the info, give me a sec and i will keep the questions coming.

ummm..... where does a cpu clock multiplier come from? and i know it can be changed and ive overclocked before but i dont understand what the cpu does when you tell it to raise the multiplier.

also i heard that ACC can unlock disabled cache and cpu core with chances of instability, what are the chances of it working and how does it work?

1. Should I get 2x4890s, wait for 5800s to drop in price, or wait for Nvidia's GT300s?

2. Name the three largest nations in the year 100 CE/AD

3. Will I fail English394?

jms: you ahve about any chance as far as i am concerned

BSD: 1) either 5800 or NVIDIA is good, but what is your primary use
2) Rome is one, the other 2, dont even know. like i said, history is not my strongest sub.
3) Do this math equation

1. depends on what you want, i think a single graphics card looks much better in a machine then multiple so i would say buy a 5870 like me :) and they should drop in price soon.

2. Han China, Rome

3. if you have below a 70 at the end of the semester then yes :P unless that is wherever you live the have below 65 is failing or below 60 is failing

The clock multiplier of a cpu allows it to have more cycles than the front side bus, meaning it can compute more information internally than it can export. This is fine, since most of the time the data has needs several instructions applied to it before it can be shipped back out on the FSB. The multiplier itself just amplifies the frequency of the FSB by a factor of the multiplier (if you have a cpu with an FSB of 266 MHz and a multiplier of 10, the external clock (or FSB) will be amplified by 10, resulting in an internal clock (cpu speed) of 2666 MHz). I hope that's not too confusing.

The chances are not known to us (since not every cpu is tried), and only AMD would know (if they even record that data). When a chip is defective (or is needed to fill production needs) cpu manufacturers disable the defective parts of the cpu and sell it as a lower model. Some bios configurations allow one to bypass this disabling of certain parts and force the cpu to behave like a higher model. Sometimes this will be fine, such as in the case where the disabling was used to for production purposes, but sometimes when the disabling was due to legitamite defectiveness, the cpu is not stable.

Ok, then I don't it OP. Whats the point of asking people to ask you anything, if you don't have the answers? Sorry, but if you don't know, this thread is dumb.
