I7 better than Intel core 2 Quad?

I got a
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 CPU
ATI HD4870
8GB DDR2

I'm editing movies with it but it isn't running very smooth. I'm thinking about selling the whole thing because If I'd change to a i7 CPU I'd a new Motherboard and RAM. But I'm not sure if it will run better.
So I'm not sure if it's a good idea?

you wont see Much of a difference if you switch to the core i7.

what you may want to do instead of replacing cpus is to find a video editing program that runs on ATI's gpgpu stream technology .

What this technology does is instead of running a visual editing program (and other programs like it) off the cpu and it's directed to the gpu.

Here a video showing gpgpu vs cpu. Now this is nvidia cuda tech in stead of ati's stream but they both do nearly (if not exactly) the same thing.
