1tb seagate freeAgent external hard drive only see 36 gb

i own a 1tb external hard drive. when i pluged it in the usb port it prompts me to format the drive. I formatted the drive now the 1tb only see 36gb....please help anybody?

Sounds like you formatted the drive using the FAT 32 file system, which will only recognize 40 GB, which works out to about 36 GB of HDD space once you include that file system's overhead. Reformat the drive and select NTFS as the file system and it should recognize the full drive.
