Thinkpad 390(..): what is a FRU 10L1751 inverter good for?

Hi,

reading about "use this FRU 10L1751 inverter to repair display problems"
on different places (including eBay) I womder what this device actually
is used for.

e.g. my new (well, used, but new for me) laptop 390X is suffering from
some strange display problem: it flickers a lot after some time of
using it. Sometimes I think it flickers during I/O operations but
also sometimes it starts flickering when the screen saver is fired up....

Could replacing the inverter help here?
