Old Card - 9800 gtx +
Possible new card - 9800 GX2 or 260 gtx, or maybe another 200 series.

GX2 - on review sites it mostly beats out the 260 and depending on res and aa it even beats out the 280.
heard about issues with SLI, can that be solved with a new SLI profile?
Does it have very bad heat issues, or is it just wht case/cooling you use?
A big question on my mind is what power supply is sufficient for this card

260 - On forums 90% of people say the 260 is the way to go, it being a single card and taking less power.
also since its a new card with a newer chip it could be better for newer games.

I was leaning towards the 9800 gx2 but after reading more im confused again :p. I play cod 4 and crysis etc but mostly play lotro online (similar to WoW). so which one is worth it in terms of long term performance

avoid the old tech like the GX2

GTX260 is a good solid choice, also check out ATi's selection

and please, none of that "what resolution to match your video card/monitor etc" - its BS, my old rig with my FX5600 can run DOOM3 max at 1440x900 but it sure as hell wont run anything from today at the same settings - that disproves the stupid myth instantly.

my suggestion is get GTX260.as mention above the 9800 GX2 is an old tech. if you want more power you might want to SLI the card or get better card such GTX275 or GTX285.your choice.

at my place you can get GTX 260 SLI a lot more cheaper than a single GX2 :na:

Just wait a little longer (sept 10-20) and buy dx11 capable 5870 which will most probably destroy GTX285.
Your GTX285 card will be worthless at that time :)

some said GTX 275 is even better than GTX 280. GTX 285 is the fastest single GPU from NVidia at the moment.
regarding GTX 280 and 285 maybe you should look at the benchmark and price for those two cards. then you can decide which one is really worth for you.

yea, i probably will go for the 275 gtx, it should last for at least a year or more before i need to change again. btw do the nvidia 200 series have hdmi audio pass through like ati cards? or do you need to manually hook up the spdif cable?

Here come the flames....

Honestly, I would hold onto that 9800gtx+ atleast until the next generation of cards are out. If you cannot wait a few months, then pick up another 9800gtx+ and go sli. You will get similar results between a 260 and 275 for less money.

Amazing.

Attach a 24" 1080p monitor to a HD4670, but only run it at 1280x800. Measure your FPS. Playable, eh?
Ok, now let's go to the full 1920x1080 resolution. Oops, you say you're looking at a slide show? Hmmm, better find a more powerful GPU to match your monitor's resolution.

Sheesh...
