Im building a gaming system for a friend to compare with his brother's system.

his brother's build is i7 920, gtx 275, 6gb ddr3 consair 1333 mhz, 25 samsung monitor, etc..
cost to build approx $1500 (6/2009) -- just tower

this is what im planning to build for him.
cpu = amd phenom ii 955 or 965
mobo = msi 790fx / msi790gx/ asus 790x evo

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131402
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813130224
gpu = HD 5770
ram = 8 gb ddr3 1600
monitor = dual 22' 1080p (aoc/acer/samsung, etc)

approx cost = $800-$1000 (tower only)

how is this build compare to the one above? im curious about the gpu but i figured since his monitor is only 22' there's no point to waste on 5800 series.

primary pupose is for gaming/multimedia.
CPU @ stock for both, no OCcing
xfire build unlikely to happen (but just incase - thats why i put 790fx as an option)
everything will be bought black friday/cyber monday. will look for the best deals.

I'd assume that would run all of those games on near-max at well abover 60fps. Don't bother with the 965, get the 955 and tbh I would try for a 5850 over a 5770 just to make sure.

The 5770 is a decent enough card but the 5850 is a monster, and with that your friends pc will be better at gaming than his brothers.

------------------------------ AMD to make $1.5bn profit Q4, *gauranteed*

i know 5850 is better than 5770. but i guess i'll just have to wait till black friday to see how much much cheaper everything would cost.

my budget to build was $1500, thats including dual monitor (1080p) high end speakers (klipsch pro media 2.1 or logitech z-2300, wireless keyboard mouse (mx5500/mx3200)

is there really a big difference between 5850 over 5770 with using 22' monitors?
considering all factors, price/use/size of monitor/games used for diablo/aion/wow/cod
5850=$299
5770=$175

Yes, especially if you turn on AA/AF. Don't sell yourself short in the graphics department. On line benchmarks will show you frame rates but not a lot of these sites will tell you the card won't stumble when the going gets tough. I thought about dual 4770's and talked myself out of it. I did get a 5850 but I still think I should have held out for a 2gig model..... just me.

I wouldn't bother with the MSI 790FX-GD70 as it's unlikely he'll ever need 4 graphics cards, I would also probably just go for the 955. But would try to go for the 5850 if you can squeeze it into the budget.

OS: BSD, Linux, Solaris & Windows (use VirtualBox)

yea i know. i'll prolly just go with this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Comb [...] mbo.273337

and could prolly squeeze 5850. just for bragging that its better than gtx275

i doubt he'll ever xfire.. looking mostly for higher mhz for ram. and like i said OCCing is unlikely to happen

also how about ati 4890? how is that compared to gtx 275/hd5770?

5850 seems to be sold out

Hello,
the fact is that 4890 is better than 5770, but if would be thinking about getting 4890 your best choice would be Vapor-x version, it's bit better than ordinary 4890.

Difference: 4890 Vapor-x starts from 194$ (174$ MIR) when cheapest 5770 starts from 165$. Buying 5XXX series card you will get DX11 support and few other things that older 4XXX cards don't support that. Prices from newegg.com

I would go with 5850 if i were you. Just try to look on a net for 5850 maybe you'll be lucky and will get one ;)
