My last upgrade was from:
Gigabyte P965 DS3
E-6600 @ 3.2
2x1gb Corsair DDR2-800
EVGA 8800GTS 320

To what is listed in my sig.

The main advantage you will see is the 45nm Wolfdale chips run much cooler and are even better overclockers than the Conroe line. The E-8400 also benefits from a faster stock speed and larger cache.

Ok that being said ( and I do love this E-8400 ) I really would not recommend buying it now. Go with a quad. I also have to say with i7 and i5 out that the LGA775 chips are overpriced for what you get.

I saw a pretty good speed boost when I upgraded but I did my whole setup not just a chip. I plan on keeping this rig untill around next summer and even though much faster systems are out there now it still *feels* fast to me. I do plan on boosting my overclock to the 4ghz range as soon as I upgrade to an Antec 1200 case though. I really dont work with many apps that would use a quad.

I agree.. but if you really want to upgrade the E8400 is a good CPU and you would see a speed increase because of the increase in cache.
Right now not a whole lot takes advantage of a Quad core cpu but in a couple yrs that will likely change.

If you go with the E8400 plan on upgrading again in the future.
If you go with a Quad Core you may be able to put off upgrading longer. But I agree with anort3 that they are overpriced.

ehh, I'd either upgrade to at least a Core 2 Quad.

If you can upgrade your system but are tight on money, I'd take a look at the phenom's and if you can, s1156.

If you have plenty of money, just upgrade to s1366.

Also, if it's just for games, upgrading your graphics card would be just fine.

The e8400 was great, and is still pretty potent...but sooner or later you will make that step up to a quad and you wont ever go back.
