First time builder (Heavy Gaming Machine)

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Early September - Early January

BUDGET RANGE: I'm thinking $1,500. A little higher would be acceptable.

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming + Surfing the web are number 1. Lots of multitasking with other things is also done.

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers. Monitor recommendations are appreciated but I'm mostly just looking for help with the tower.

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: I've never bought computer parts from a website before. I browsed Newegg a lot, though, and found some nice deals as well as many happy customers, so perhaps Newegg is a good bet? Any is fine though.

PARTS PREFERENCES: I really don't know. I spent a long time looking at rigs centered around the Intel Core i7 920 only to find people recommending cheaper alternatives. I really liked the sound of the i7 920 but it is apparently a bit on the expensive side. I'm pretty sure I want a quad-core processor. I'd like my MoBo to also have an IEEE 1394 port.

Also, on Newegg i found RAM: OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Low Voltage Desktop Memory Model OCZ3G1600LV6GK
This seems like a good option to me (not sure if i need 6 gigs, but if i don't have another computer that could use the additional stick.)

OVERCLOCKING: Yes. Also, the simpler the better, for I have never OC'd anything bigger than a PSP :-P.

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Yes. Even if you suggest a single graphics card that should handle my hardcore gaming needs, I'd like a MoBo with SLI/Crossfire support.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Also, any additional information on OCing (and if i need a better cooling system if i plan to OC), etc. would be helpful. I've also never used Linux before and would like to give it a try. If anyone can tell me a good way to try it out as well as OS recommendations (for both my trial and perhaps for my new build) that'd be great.

Sorry if I left info out. Just tell me if I did and I'll gladly fill you in.

  1. at $1500 you are at the price range where an i7 makes sense .

Most x58 mbs use triple channel ram so 3 x 2 gig kit is required .

a pair of gtx 275's or ATI 4890s for gfx , but even one of these would satisfy most gamers with a 24 inch 1920 x 1200 monitor
