i'm looking for advice for a future build... it will be used mostly for gaming...

What should i spend most my budget on.

i currently own a nvidia gtx285 (i was just gonna upgrade my current system) but the card is big and mother board is old etc.. i think it would be best to just build a new one...
I would like to keep the build under 1000 bucks but im willing to go over if need be...

At least you have one of the expensive part. Will you be using any other parts from old comp, i.e. HDD's, Case, KB & Mouse?

For gaming, get a Phenom 2 955 and a 790GX mobo with 4gb of Gskill or Corsair DDR3-1333.
Newegg has Western Digital 500gb Black Edition 32mb cache for $59.99.
Antec 300 and a quality 550w+ psu.

Having the expensive part already will do you good.

CPU: 955
Motherboard: Gigabyte 790gx
PSU: 750tx / 750w pc power cooling
Case: Antec 900 / RC-690 / CM Storm Scout / HAF 922
Memory: Since it is a AM3/am2+ and your doing gaming, DDR2 1066 will be fine for 4gigs
HDD: 640gb wd black / 1tb wd black
Optical: LG 22x / Samsung 22x
heatsink: ( IF NEEDED ) S1283v / Scythe Mugen / Sunbeam CR-CCTF 120mm(comes with tx-2 Thermal Compound)

will probably buy new parts if need be. i have a AMD phenom 9950 @2.6ghz Do i need to buy a new processor or is this one fine for gaming... ( i play mostly first person shooters)

i will need to buy a HDD, case, ram, cooling (air) blu-ray disc and a mobo...

I was told that the 790gx chipset is taylor made for amd video cards if this is true how would that effect my system (seeing as i already have an nvidia card). and will i be able to Sli if i need to in the future?

Difference in 790gx/790fx, 790fx is suppose to run 2-3% faster than normal and have 16x pci-e slots

790gx will run just fine but have 1 16x and 1 8x pci-e.

you wouldn't see much difference in the 16x/8x vs. 16x/16x in crossfire unless you have a 4850x2 or a 4870x2.

Also, 790gx vs. 790x.. most difference I could tell you is one has onboard and the other doesn't.

Ram for gaming, you want a good tight set of ram.

since this is am3/am2+ board, ddr2 1066 would be your best bet IMO.

CL:5-5-5-15 is probably the lowest you can get.

If its an AM2+ board then you want 5-5-5-15 for 1066 DDR2 ram, if it is an AM3 only board aim for 7-7-7-24 DDR3 1600, its generally about the same as DDR3 1333.

And you CANNOT SLI on any good amd motherboard, the nVidia chipsets are the only ones that give you that option and they arent good.
