Printer installation failed the system cannot find the path specified

I am attempting to install an HP K550 Pro officejet printer. I have downloaded the required installation software from the HP website. When I run the installation software everything proceeds fine until it comes to the connection stage. It asks how the printer will connect to the computer. When I select the USB option and click next it detects the printer and attempts to connect, then the Microsoft Hardware Installation Wizard engages and reports that the hardware cannot be installed, system cannot detect specified path. Can anybody help?

Make sure the printer is connected and power is on. The printer will show as connected to port USB001 (unless you already have another printer on that port).
