The motherboard chipset is one factor; 939 cpus only work with ddr memory, not ddr2; am2 works with ddr2; amd started the onboard memory controller with 754; Intel is finally doing it with i5 and i7. A few boards have more than one type of memory slot, but they tend to be limited for overclocking.
