i own a hp hdx18 with the q9000 (2.0 quad) and im looking to upgrade to the best quad currently out there..i know there are 2.8-3.0 quads but i dunno if they fit or not..can someone please tell me how i can figure out if for instance the q9550 will fit im my hdx18.

First of all,Q9550 is a desktop CPU and won't fit in your notebook,you have 2 options,Q9100 and QX9300 which are clocked @ 2.2 and 2.5

with the i7 now being implemented in laptops do you think mine stands a chance to have better processors being released? or am i doomed to the qx9300 being my "top of the line"?

Well i7 needs a new socket so the best CPU you can get is QX9300 which performs good,here is a review of it compared to i7 920XM:
