Install cpu cooler and computer won't boot

I've stripped a Dell 420 to use most of the components inside a Coolermaster CM690 chassis with a Zalman 600 psu, a ASUS P5K WS motherboard and a Coolermaster Hyper Z600 cpu cooler. The computer boots without the Hyper installed but when installed after switching on the power the psu immediately cuts out, take off the cooler and it boots again. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong? Although I've built computers before, in the distant past (a Pentium 4 was the last), I'm not very familiar with new builds.

Seems like something isn't properly grounded in concern to the cooler. Were there perhaps any little extenders that came with it when, i.e. little screw like things that slightly raise it up? Do you have these little extenders installed on the MOBO as well?

Thanks, I finally sorted the problem but you are absolutely right. Wish you had read my post a little earlier as it could have saved me days of anguish.
