Xbox hardware failing?

my Xbox will not connect to the internet no matter what I try. I select 'restart test' and after a second, it comes up with an error message. I have the wireless adapter, and I got this Xbox two days ago and the internet has never worked on it. My laptop has no trouble connecting to the internet from the same spot, so I'm thinking that it's not the internet that's failing here, but the hardware is defective. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Try temporarily turning off wireless security in the router (see literature which came with the router). If you can then connect the Xbox it may be that it doesn't support the same security type as your computer -- select a type which works with both.
