i was looking around and couldn't find a answer, can Athlon X4 run on a AM2 motherboard, or it have to be on AM3 mobo, because i already have ddr2 ram and i dont want to buy ddr3 if i can run it on AM2 motherboard.
It will work in an AM2, AM2+ or AM3, but only if the BIOS supports it. All AM2+ and AM3 board should support it 'out of the box' but some AM2 boards may need an update.
What motherboard do you have?
------------------------------CPU: PhenomII X4 955 BE ; RAM: 8GiB
OS: BSD, Linux, Solaris & Windows (use VirtualBox)

on an am2 board you probably wont find bios updates for that but id say you shouldnt have a problem with top tear board makers for board with am2+ socket... =) the best way to see that is go search a little around on manufacturers like asus and gigabyte, then give a look at the am2+ section then you'll have the cpu compatibility table somewhere and you just need to check if that particular model suports am3 cpu's out of the box or if it may need a bios update =)
Seriously, all you had to do was type the motherboards name into google and the very first link would of brought you to Asrocks page showing detailed information on that motherboard. From there all that was needed was click cpu support list on the left side of the page and a whole list of every cpu that board supports comes up.
Simple answer after under 1 minute of research, yes AM3 processors including Athlon II X4 and Phenom II X4 are supported up to 125W.
i hate noobs like you who pretend to know, but really dont know what they are talking about.
Athlon || X4 is officially supported by AM3 motherboards, and not on AM2 motherboards, however it could work on some AM2 motherboards, on the mobo that i posted i dont see the Athlon || x4 there listed as in exact, but some people might have it working even if its not on the list.
so if you dont know what your talking about, then the door is on your next right, go there and make fool out of your self, and btw you really sound like George bush lool
