Can not connect via the internet but can ping & telnet

I installed a new hard drive with XP Pro and dowloaded all the listed drivers on dell website support for the model and using the official dell service code for the gx260.
Can see the lan and connect, can not get through the router to the internet, yet can ping the website yahoo ok.
Is there a driver missing or a security issue with the windows firewal or something else?
Router is Cisco linksys WRT54G2.
My laptop cable connects to router ok with internet connectivity. Running win 7.

There is a file called Winsockxpfix.exe that will fix a corrupted XP windows socket file. Use google and only download from a trustworthy site, even then scan it with your anti-virus before you execute it.

i was able to get connected, after I disabled my firewall and security blocks, Panda Antivirus freebie i got .
