New memory card says it needs formatting?

I have a Kodak EasyShare C875 which is 2 yrs old and I bought a new memory card for it today. It is a namebrand SanDisk 4GB and I have never had this problem before. My book that came with the camera doesn't say anything about this. any ideas what could be making this happen?
