Win2000 directories freezing?

OK, this is screwed up, and definitely seems like something that's so unusual that none of you have experienced. I already checked Microsoft's Knowledge Base but I couldn't find anything on it. Anyway, here's the problem.

If I open a directory on my desktop and click a few files or just do some random clicking in there, the directory would just freeze on me for around 1 minute. During this time, I can't do anything in the directory, but everything else works fine. It seems to happen with any directory on the desktop and doesn't matter how many files or which file types are in it. Anyone got any ideas?

TIA,
-Lito

A few quick thoughts:

Have you run a complete diskcheck (chkdsk) on the hard drive, or used a utility from the drive manufacturer to scan the drive?

Have you installed the chipset drivers?

Is DMA or UDMA enabled for the drive?

Have you switched out the IDE cable, or checked the connections?

Just out of curiosity, have you tried this logged on as a different user? I had a case where something in one particular user's desktop was corrupt and would crash the machine on boot if you logged on to that account. I fixed it by recreating that user and thus a new desktop folder.
