Looking to buy a new CPU, MOBO and RAM, I really like the price and specs on the Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition

However I don't have any personal experience with them and haven't really heard anything about them.
So I was wondering if there is anything I should know before purchasing. It will be mated with:

this mobo

and this RAM

I am also unfamiliar with DDR3 Ram. It will have a PCIe x16 512 GDDR3 Radeon 3800 for a while and a 500GB sata3 GB/s Samsung HDD.

I will mostly be doing gaming on it, and I will be running XP 64 bit until I buy Windows 7.

I would really like to get a second opinion on this to know if I would have any issues with all the new hardware, such as compatibility or something soon being phased out, as I have been out of the PC building scene for a while. My current rig is a Athlon XP x2 3800+ @ 2.08 (yes it's an ancient socket 939) with a Sapphire Tech board.

Thanks a lot.

i would recommend upgrading ur graphics card down the road

The 955 is a great CPU, and it can OC fairly well.

For your mobo you don't need a GX because you'll have a graphics card, so you can go for the cheaper 790X version to save you some cash. 790X mobos in Newegg

For RAM, if you want to spend that much I would recommend these Mushkin RAM, as I have it as well. But they do have faster timings, meaning faster performance, if you buy the 8 CAS RAM from your link the slow timings are counterproductive towards the 1600mhz. 1333mhz RAM would perform better if they had fast timing. Mushkin RAM

The nice thing about having an IGP too is that it helps if you have any trouble (for troubleshooting/bad VGA). Otherwise, you can look at 770 boards if you don't need crossfire.

Great, good call on the board, but I'm still confused a bit on the RAM, there are lke three different 1333mhz ones PC3 10600, PC3 10660, and PC3 10666. Which one would I want? Something like this

with a CAS of 7 and a 7-7-7-20 timing?

also why aren't my URL's coming up as links?

thanks!

Yeah, the ram is pretty flexible. It is fine if you buy faster than you need as you can always clock it slower. I believe the PIIs like a max of DDR3 1333, so focus on DDR1333 or higher and cas7 or lower. That ram you linked to would probably be fine. Also for links, I don't put the stuff around it. Just pasting the web address does it automatically for me.

[ url= link ]text take out the spaces and fill in the link and the text you'd like. As you write your post there is a link button on the top to help you, just paste it in the external link and you can write something between the ][ for text.

As for RAM, you can go either 1333 or 1600, the 955 can support it, you can even OC higher, but it's harder to find stable clocks. It doesn't really matter what PC you get, but just focus on the timings and the lower the voltage, the better.
