Blue Screen When Updating GTX 280 drivers

As the title of the thread states, this is what is happening to me when I want to update my nvidia driver for the gtx 280. It's very odd. I download the drivers from the official nvidia site, or I get them via microsoft update, but it doesn't seem to matter. I install, and on reboot, before I get to windows, I get a blue screen with an error code n Don't know what that's about, but it is stopping me from getting the latest updates. Instead, I have to go into safe mode, uninstall the nvidia drivers on the pc, and reinstall the original drivers.

Can anyone help?

My system i7 920 @3.8 ghz
3X2 1600 DDR3 ram
asus rampage II extreme
nvidia gtx 280
windows vista basic
