In light of Newegg's AM sale on the 750GB caviar black, I'm now considering two of those in RAID rather than one 1TB caviar black. At an additional $35 for only 75% of the space, what added performance can I expect from a RAID setup compared with a single drive?
You'll essentially have the equivalent of a drive that is twice as fast and bigger. The shell shocker for that drive is one of the best I've seen in a while, and you should definitely jump on it ASAP.
Double check to make sure your motherboard supports RAID if you're using a "budget" board.
I posted this same question to the Hard Disk part of the site and received the quoted response, does that affect my purchase decision? Or is RAID with 2x 750gb still better than a single 1TB by enough to justify the extra cost and smaller space?
"Black WDs are not recommended for RAID, they have timeout circuitry to fix errors (which is nice on a single drive), but can cause RAID to drop. You want the WD RE3 series for RAID"
I've never heard that argument before. RE3's are enterprise HDD's for business. It's possible he's right, but I've had 2 WD Blacks in RAID 0 without any problems.
