We all know that the Phenom 9650 was the fixed version of the Phenom 9600, What I do not know to this day is why it was changed from being unlocked to locked. I was one of the affected by the TLB nonsense and I had it RMA'd thinking the next one they send will work fine. It did not so I opted for them to send me a 9650 (silly me I thought it would still have unlocked multipliers) I ask the community what made them change this feature, or what do you think their reason for doing it was?

the TLB bug was the fact that a phenom clocked higher than about 2.4 ghz would become majorly unstable and so AMD locked the multiplier so that the procs would stay stable at the stock clock

The reason was because AMD released their faster 9850 BE at the time along with the slower clocked 9750,9650 and 9550 variant CPU's.

Not even close actually. Given certain instructions, specifically circumstances that are more common in servers than in normal desktop tasks, the CPU would lock up and force a reboot. It was completely unrelated to clockspeed, and had to do with the way that the processor handled the translation lookaside buffer under heavy loads.

Would there be any "hack" to get an unlocked multi? I know I am reaching here, but still.

The 9600 had and unlocked multiplier because it was the top processor of the Phenom 9X00 series, the Phenom 9650 doesn't because when it released it was no longer the top model, the Phenom 9850 was.

It is no different than saying "why is the Phenom II 940 BE while the Phenom II 945 isn't BE".
