how can I run a test on my cpu fan, to make sure it is working correctley?

Download HWMonitor from CPU-ID (search on google for link).

Its free and shows you reported fan speeds. If no fan speeds display, there isn't much else you can do. If you're worried about temperatures, HWMonitor will show you those too.

You can download Prime95 and run a torture test if you want to see if it works correctly when the computer is under load.

Speed Fan is another good free app for watching fans speeds and temps.

Some of these programs take the temperatures from different points so I like to use a mix of apps to get a more thorough assessment.
