It's ideal to select the RAM from the Qualified Vendors List (QVL) for your motherboard if it specifies it.ASUS for example has a QVL for their motherboards in which they test the RAM for compatibility.

Hey, I have a question maybe related to this thread. I have AMD Ph II 965 BE stepping C2 and 2x 2GB DDR3 1333 MHz Kingstone memory modules. I need more than 4GB ram in my windows 7 64x edition for vmware server installed on it... In old processor stepping c2 can i run 8GB ram on 1333 Mhz or only 1066 Mhz in single channel mode ? Anybody help me ?

thx, that's right, but what about this ariticle

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/11382/amd_s_phenom_ii_am3_has_memory_problems/index.html

some person posts on anothers forums that there is chance for old c2 stepping processor amd 965 be is able to run with 4 ddr3 1333 but amd doesn't take resposible for this, new c3 stepping provides full ddr3 1333 support for 4 dimm.
so i my case i think it will work but bios downgrade the MHz to 1066 as is wrote in article above ...

Seems like your question is already answered on the link you provided.

there are 2 conditions:
1. 4GB RAM @ 1333Mhz
2. 8GB RAM @ 1066Mhz

In your case(If you use >4GB RAM) then the quantity will benefit you more than speed.

SO get more RAM and if there is some problem then underclock it to 1066Mhz.
Otherwise Increase the voltage.

What you do is go to the ASUS support website
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

Under General Download select motherboard under select product,Select Socket AM2/AM2+/AM3 under select series and then select your M4A785TD-V EVO under select models.A pop up will appear to select your operating system.Once selected it will show the downloads.
Click on the + sign under Qualified Vendors List It will show the M4A785TD-V EVO Memory QVL.Then download the file,be sure to save it and open it up.

The QVL memory could also be in your motherboards manual as well.
It will tell you everything that you need to know.
