Dell Dim 4600 Memory Problem

I originally posted this message in the wrong category so maybe I'll have more luck here. (Sorry, first time user)

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 running XP Sp3; I upgraded memory from 2.5 Gig to 4 Gig; the BIOS sees the memory (4096) but when I query the System in the Control panel it only shows 3.25 Gig. I've never seen this before.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That's normal for any 32 bit windows version; you can switch to a 64 bit version of xp, vista, or windows 7 to get your system to use the full amount, but it's not worth the money.

Thanks for the info, I had a feeling it was sometning like that. I have gone ahead and configured a new "kit" computer to replace my aging Dell, although I really can't complain it's been a reliable unit for 7 years. Thanks again.
