Will the GA-MA790X-UD4 work with my Phenom II X2?

Yes, they are backwards compatible. However, with that board you won't be able to utilize the DDR3 memory controller.

No, the first motherboard you mentioned wouldn't work with DDR3.

It's a good switch. The new one you've picked will.
