Encrypted files on salvaged harddrive

I recently had a laptop die on me. I pulled the harddrive and bought an enclosure. It is a Sata to USB enclosure. The laptop was Vista and the desktop i am moving the files to is XP. I have set the ownership to everyone. However, most of the files i want are encrypted on the laptop harddrive by that user. I have tried to boot from that harddrive and that was a no go. I was curious if there is a way to decrypt those files so that i can move them onto my desktop. I have tried to add a user as well but it gives me a windows error 5.

Encrypted files and folders are a matter of someone's system security.

We have no method of verifying you are the rightful owner of the encrypted files and folders,

nor will we attempt such verification. We have Rules of Conduct with Terms of Service that

give a blanket prohibition of helping with these type questions.

Sorry, Tom's Hardware forum doesn't provide any guide to bypass password protection.
