I have installed and uninstalled a lot of applications over the years.
My system is starting up slower and slower. I regularly update,
defragment, and let XP Home compress the old files.

Is it possible that the Prefetch files are slowing system startup?
Can I delete them and if so, will the system recreate them as needed?

It's a good idea to periodically empty the Prefetch Folder. So yes,
definitely delete them.

Why? It was my understanding that they're continually being updated.
