My friend gave me his old PSU, and he said last time he used it, it worked perfectly, but theres something rolling around inside of it, i dont know what its called but it looks like this...

except the cylinder is skinnier and the metal rods are shorter.

what is this, is it important?

Lol pretty much anything inside a power supply is "important". You might want to toss that thing before it hurts something.

The power supply is not something to go "cheap" or "broken" on.

It is an electrolytic capacitor and it has snapped off.

Replace the PSU my friend ... it is the safest option.

Repairing one is not easy and will cost more than it is worth.

Don't mess around inside of these unless your a qualified tech either.

A PSU is the most dangerous thing inside of the box - and an electrical and fire hazard.

The most dangerous thing outside of the box is of course ... the user.
