Netgear Wireless Router Connection Issue

If I hook my modem up to my desktop with no router, my internet works great. When I put the router in place to create wireless for my laptop, my desktop then constantly loses connection. The odd part of it is that my homepage (NY Times) still works even when all other web pages will not. I can click on any links on nytimes.com and it works, but if I navigate away from nytimes, it says "cannot load page" or server down. I know this doesn't make any sense... but the laptop has a fine wireless connection while this is all happening. Any ideas on how I can possibly fix this?

1) with computer plugged straight into cable modem, select "Run..." from start menu
2) type "cmd"
3) type "ipconfig /all
note the DNS address

next, plug the router in so that you can set up the wireless network.
1) now, go to the router homepage should be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1
2) input user name: admin and password: (whatever your password for the router is)
3) go to the status page that lists the WAN IP information.
4) compare the DNS address that the router is receiving to the one given directly to the computer by the modem.

if they are different, you will need to enter the working DNS address into the field on the router web page in the DNS server section.
