My usb ports are not working windows 7

I have a Dell desktop.. non of my usb ports are working..it is an older computer. The light on the computer is orange and the ligh on the monitor is orange..should be green.. some reason it is in safe mode. My son was updating his Ipod and it stopped working. Opened i.cleaned it... nothing..

Seems to be an influx of different problems recently after updating / installing Ipod - Suggest you Windows System Restore to date prior to Ipod update.
