i7 920, Asus P6TD Deluxe (the D is important), 12GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, OC the CPU to 4GHz with a Megahalems/Ultra 120 Rev C (make sure it's a Rev C) or COgage True Spirit and you're away.

Phenom 720BE / Asus 790X Evo AM3: $219 ($209 AR)

If you feel an overwhelming obligation to spend $275: Phenom 955BE / Asus 790X Evo AM3

if you got a Micro Center near you then u could get core i5 for $149.99

And for a compatible motherboard: you should get Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P for $169.99

If you dont have an Micro Center near you then you should get:

AMD athlon II x4 620 $99.00

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO- $119.99 ($109.99 after $10 mail in rebate)

hope this helps.

I agree, especially with the top suggestion. He or she will be able to upgrade the cpu and ram much more in the future. It is really worth the little extra money. LGA 775 is getting replaced withe LGA 1156 and LGA 1366. LGA 775 is about done with its life span, plus I think you get more bang for your buck because of the higher fsb speeds.
