I understand how manufacturers simply add extra memory to sell cards, but what's the difference between these two that makes the VisionTek so expensive?

Basically, the Visiontek is an awful price for a 512MB. Probably limited stock on a former top seller, so current price is high; avoid it.

The XFX 1GB is a nice card, and about as cheap as you'll find a 1GB 4870 before rebates.

By the end of the month the HD5870 will most likely be available and perhapse the price for the Hd4870 will go down a little.
