System disc error message

please answer me via email (I would be able to view email on my laptop) in very simple terms and tech how I should resolve this "system disc error" on my PC which has windows XP
did I lose all my info on my drive? When I turn on my PC "system disc error....replace disc or drive " comes up. I also cannot locate the original HP disc (recovery) that the computer came with. HELP......

First, check your BIOS settings to make sure they are set to boot from the Hard drive that holds windows.

Second, verify that the data cable/ribbon from your motherboard to your hard disk(s) is connected properly to both the hard drive and to the motherboard.

Third, verify that the power cable from the power supply is properly connected to the hard drive.
