Keyboard recognition on a fresh install

Last response: in Systems

this is my last resort:

ill start off with specs:

Gigabyte UP45-UD3LR motherboard
500 GB HD (SATA)
RADEON 4870 HD video card
2 gigs of ram (only one stick used for turning on right now)
intel core 2 quad processor
generic cd/dvd rom.

everything runs fine until i get to the Gigabyte mobo main screen (i have not installed an operating system yet). the keyboard will not get recognized. i have gone through 2 pS/2 keyboards and 2 USB keyboards, and not one of them recognized. i then thought that the bios was the problem, but i can't exacly flash it without a keyboard, so i exchanged it (the motherboard) for a new one. got the same model, and guess what? same problem.

to date ive gone through three PSU's, and 2 mobo's.

please help me find out why the keyboard(s) is not being recognized.

Strange.
It sounds like your problem lies with something plugged into your motherboard, possibly the RAM.

See if you can run Memtest (you don't need a motherboard, just get a copy using another computer and run it with floppy or CD)

Unhook your hard drive, anything else not absolutely necessary to enter BIOS and double check that your RAM is in the correct slot (only one slot of the four should work; this is the same with two sticks. The slots are critical).

The RAM is the only thing that makes sense to me.

it seems the only way to access the bios is using a keyboard (i have to press the delete key, but the keyboard doesn't work). I'm confident that the Ram is in the correct slot however, because slots are indicated by number on the motherboard as DDR2_1, DDR2_2, DDR2_3, and DDR2_4.

what do you mean the "gigabyte motherboard main screen" If you have no OS there shouldnt be anything besides the BIOS

im afraid that this motherboard (UP45-UD3LR) boots a screen offering different choices, including one to go to the bios. all of those choices are unavailable to me because they are accessed by a keyboard button, which is not being recognized.

i should add though, that on system startup, that i can press caps lock rapid fire and see it light up. however, this is only for a second before it stops being recognized.

this tells me that the keyboard CAN be recognized, but something is preventing it? idk.
