I'm going to be building a new computer in the near future and was wondering which CPU to buy. I do not really know the differences between a xenon and core 2. I mainly play video games and surf the internet on my computer and was wondering what the pros and cons would be for a Xenon and Core 2. Basically what I am asking is would I rather build a Core i-7 computer or get a dual socket Xenon motherboard and have 2 xenon processors to play video games, etc...

Thanks,
Zack

For what you do even the i5 would be overkill.
What do you want to buy?
Post your options and maybe we can help you to choose.

I take it you mean Xeon, not Xenon.

Regardless, dual CPU is overkill for gaming - games are only just starting to make use of a single QUad-core CPU, let alone 2 of them.

How serious is your gaming? If you don't play anything new or intensive, then get a Athlon II system and it'll do what you want forever and a day.

Otherwise go Core i5 with a nice graphics card and you're fine.

A truly monster system for high-level gaming would be Core i7 9xx on X58 motherboard with a high-end (or 2) graphics cards.

So how intense are your "video games"?

The Xeon CPUs generally offer features that aren't wanted by most desktop users, such as ECC memory or the ability to use more than one CPU in a system via a multi-socket motherboard.

It would also be helpful to post your estimated budget and what type of monitor/resolution you will be playing with.

i doubt dual Xeon's (Nehalem) is in your price range anyways
figure at least $300 for a decent board
$550/cpu (2.4GHz Quad Core Xeon) so thats $1100
and the memory is a tad more expensive

stick to desktop parts, you don't need it for gaming

Xeon CPU's and dual socket bords are for servers.
And they will not do videogames very well as some of those bords dont even have pcie16x

If you have the money to burn, I7 920 with a kickass videocard.
If you look for cost effective, Phenom955 with kickass videocard.
