My computer uses the Windows XP operating system.
I have a <Microsoft IntelliMouse > that works properly ONLY if the 1st button to
Left of the scroll wheel is operated with a very light and quick tap.

Otherwise operation of the Left button, apparently must cause 2 Clicks.

example_1 :
when a single program is chosen from a menu, this Left button must be clicked.
The lower bar (bar at the bottom of screen ) indicates that the program has been chosen TWICE after Clicking normally.

example_2:
Clicking normally on the top bar to enter a new address
causes the the computer apparently causes 2 Clicks: which enter , then cancels
the new address
say (http://www. newAdress ...)

returning the top bar to the previously loaded address
say (http://www. tomshardwa...)

QUESTION:
Is it possible to adjust the faulty Left button to eliminate this ?
I am will to disassemble the <Microsoft IntelliMouse >

except for this problem the <Microsoft IntelliMouse > seems to be working as
expected.
