Free install windows xp sound device driver

i would like to fix my sounds but my computer will not allow me it says that i have no sound device or driver allso no multimedia audio driver what should i do for this?i tryed to download them but they did not work. i lost my driver cd.can get fix for free?

Start > Run > services.msc

Scroll down list of services to Windows Audio. It should be set to Automatic.
If not, set it, and start the service.
