That doesn't make sense. Which eats up more bandwidth? A direct link, or a
user going to a site, browsing page after page, doing searches, finally
locating a file, and *then* downloading it?
Given the design of a lot of sites today, it's certainly not unusual for the
"useless page data" to be larger in size than the file you're looking for.
Go back to dialup for a day, and you'll quickly realize that most web site
designers have stopped taking the dialup users into consideration. And
you'll also realize the true bandwidth cost of a "main page link" vs a
direct link. You'll appreciate the latter.

I'll grant you this. But if this was the case, instead of just posting a
direct link, I'd point out the fact that the file needs those special
installation instructions and post a link to that page. Or both.

The argument against "deep linking" is valid with sites that depend on
subscriptions for survival, or to a lesser extent, banner ads. If there's
banner ads on Simlogical from which the owner(s) profit, I'm not seeing
them.
In cases like this, I actually see direct links as a courtesy. Otherwise
every second post on Usenet and web forums would be "Google it, do your own
searches". I don't like it when people intentionally make me waste my time.
*You* may be intimately familiar with that site, how to navigate it, how its
search engine (if any) works. But *I* might not.
For kicks, try locating TweakUI for XP on Microsoft's site. Let me know how
much time you've wasted to finally get to
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx, or
